TRUMP AND THE CHOCOLATE RATION PLAYBOOK

March 3, 2026            Editorial Team

In "1984", George Orwell describes a moment where the chocolate ration is cut from 30 grams to 20 grams - and the government announces it as an increase!

The lie isn’t subtle. It’s blatant.

But it works because the Party repeats it confidently, erases old records, and counts on people either forgetting or surrendering to the noise.

That iconic part of Orwell's novel directly mirrors Donald Trump’s pattern of falsehoods.

When Trump says something that contradicts what he said yesterday and then insists he never said the earlier thing - he is using that exact same playbook.

When he calls an obvious loss a “historic victory,” or labels negative numbers as “the best ever,” it’s the chocolate ration trick all over again: redefine reality, repeat it loudly, and dare people to keep track.

When confronted with video, transcripts, or documented facts, the move often isn’t to reconcile the contradiction - it’s to declare the evidence fake, biased, or part of a conspiracy.

In Orwell’s world, the Party rewrites newspapers. Today, the strategy is to discredit any source that preserves memory. That's why Trump has hammered home the "fake news" saying since the campaign trail leading up to his first term.

Trump's whole presidency / life follows this cycle:

Say something demonstrably false.

Repeat it with total certainty.

Attack anyone who points out the inconsistency.

Move on to the next claim before the last one is fully processed.

In 1984, the population is trained to doubt their own memory. In modern politics, the flood of contradictions creates exhaustion and exhaustion can look a lot like acceptance.

That’s why the chocolate ration scene still resonates. It shows how power can survive not by making believable arguments, but by making so many contradictory ones that truth itself starts to feel negotiable.

Trump is creating a 1984 world where everything becomes a lie. Where war is peace and dumb is smart.
